Substitutions: A Poem

Some things can be replaced, but family is irreplaceable.

Substitutions: A Poem

Ragu, for homemade Sunday sauce.

Ramen, for homemade chicken soup.


Text messages, for dinner conversations.

Phone calls, for hugs and kisses.


A family room, for a single dorm room.

Friends, for neighbors.


Long car rides home, for a 5-second walk down the hall,

and nothing, for our family.


Eating dinner together every day

and celebrating huge milestones, birthdays, and accomplishments.


Watching World News Tonight with David Muir,

Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Say Yes to The Dress,

and The Food Network, as water boils for tea.


In the kitchen or living room,

an atmosphere of happy, sad, anger, or excitement


where when you grow up and move out,

your memories will remain.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
