Ever walked through a college campus at 7:56 on a Monday morning? It is nothing short of an apocalyptic drill. With our coffee in one hand and homework we didn't finish in the other, we sprint to class in a desperate hope to get through the day, only to do it again. Even the most put together of us have adopted the "you win some, you lose some" mindset from time to time. With all the classes, social events, and late night scavenges for free food, you have no choice but to stop caring about minor (sometimes major) things that you cared about in high school.
1. Taking aesthetically pleasing notes
I used to be the girl who took the highest quality of notes, where everything was evenly spaced and neat, always looking like it had been authored by a glittery fairy. College is a different story. All that concerns you is that you have some version of what the professor said somewhere on the page. Oh, you forgot your notebook? Looks like its going on your hand. "Wait no don't go to the next sli- ...damn it."
2. Wearing dirty clothes
Apparently it's not enough that we pay our university thirty thousand dollars a year, so we need to pay $1.25 for each wash and dry cycle. That fact, plus the effort doing laundry takes, is too much sometimes. So yeah, I did wear this shirt yesterday, and I'll probably wear it tomorrow too.
3. Eating healthy
I would like to take this time to make a formal apology to my digestive system, for putting you through what must be a very confusing and painful time for you.
4. People seeing you "all-natural"
Remember when we wouldn't dare show up to school without make-up on and perfect hair? Good times...good times.
5. Being sick
When you get sick at home, you're bedridden for days. When you get sick at college, you have to do everything you normally do but with a box of tissues in your hand.
6. Sad things
No, no, we do care about SOME sad things and college doesn't completely desensitize us to the horrors of the world. But in certain situations, such as dropping your coffee down a flight of stairs and slipping in it, you can only laugh to keep from crying.
7. Dating people
Amidst the chaos, romantic interests usually get put on the back burner. But when you do find someone who tickles your fancy, going from the point of "we made out once" to "let's date" seems to take eons. And we're okay with that.
8. Physical fitness
The other day my roommate came into the room and said "I'm going to start working out everyday". I laughed sadistically.
9. Drama
This might be the only positive thing you give up when coming to college. Everyone seems to figure out by college that most things are pointless to fight about. Instead, we quietly avoid those we don't like until we're drunk, and then we approach them and give them a fake hug and say "Why don't we ever hang out!?"
10. Drinks
For the many of us who start drinking in college, our standard was never high to begin with. Nice drinks are only a thing if it's someone's birthday or someone else buys them for us. Every other time, it's some good ol' bag wine in a paper cup.
The one thing we never will give up caring about is making time to call mom and dad, because you can't tell anyone else about that embarrassing time you spilled your coffee down the stairs and slipped in it.
