Why Studying Abroad is Really Beneficial

Why Studying Abroad is Really Beneficial

Studying abroad, in my opinion, is beneficial for many reasons. Even though I have not experienced studying abroad yet (going to many locations in Europe this Summer!), I still feel that it is something that is once in a lifetime. It enhances and expands your view of the world, and helps you to better appreciate different cultures before you even enter the real world.

After college, people often don't have the time to travel the world amidst their busy schedules and careers. The good thing is is that most colleges and universities are able to offer the opportunity to go pretty much anywhere outside of the U.S. that they have programs.

Trips often come at a hefty price (isn't everything expensive, though?), but I feel the experiences are worth every penny. We are fortunate enough as we are to live in America and have the freedoms and privileges that we do. But to gain exposure out of your comfort zone and learn about how different countries and cultures operate is so beneficial, especially while you have the time. Even if the program is for 3 weeks or an entire semester, every student will have their own unforgettable experiences.

The best benefit to joining a study abroad program is that more often than not, class credits are offered. The courses you take abroad translate into credits for courses at the college or university, so it's less on your plate when you return. And you get to have an amazing experience while you're at it.

Ever since I came to college, I knew that studying abroad was a top priority. I haven't seen too much of the world outside of the US, so I'm excited to expose myself more this Summer. I've always had an appreciation for diversity, and I hope to gain an even better appreciation of it while I am abroad.I feel that after my experience, I will be well versed in a few countries' ways of life and be able to utilize my knowledge further in my career.

Having a study abroad experience on your résumé is valuable as well. It shows you can manage cross-cultural situations. Regardless of where you go, you want to appeal your experience to potential employers.

For students to be able to see the world during their four years of college is an amazing opportunity that should be taken advantage of. And the benefits go beyond just that short experience in college.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
