Studying abroad is one of the most enriching gifts we can give to ourselves. The chance to live in a foreign country among or with the locals for a duration of two weeks to a year is not something everyone has always had a chance to do. International travel is something that became popular only in the past couple of decades, and for young people alone, international travel has really only become popular in this past generation. Countless articles have been written outlining the benefits of studying abroad and many programs and schools praise students who do go abroad. We all hear about it enriching our education and fostering a new perspective on the world; these sayings are almost glistening cliches now. While they are true, here are some things people don’t talk about in study abroad information meetings:
Wine! European and some Asian cultures have a stronger drinking culture than America, so expect to get pampered while you’re away. Young kids run out of the supermarket with a case of beer, Irish folk drink till the sun goes up on the beach, european clubs pollute the darkness till 4:00 a.m. -- it’s a whole new world out there for 18-20 year olds.
Dates. Ladies, who hasn’t dreamed of falling in love in a foreign country? Depending on the duration of your stay, you may meet someone important. In my two-week study abroad experience, a girl from my program met a guy from Ireland and grew quite a liking. Another guy from my program got asked out on a date on the metro. The life long dream of marrying an Italian Fabio is definitely plausible while studying abroad.
Stereotypes. America is an amazing country, but let’s face it -- not everyone falls for our charm. Some people in other countries have an interesting opinion on Americans. We try to blend in sometimes, but most Americans stick out like the blue man group on a beach. If someone gives you a weird look or begins to bad-mouth our country, be a true American and stand up for us. It is the best feeling to express national pride. I would never call myself a die hard American, but once you step into a new territory, suddenly, America is your baby.
Independence can be a drug. Living in a foreign country all by yourself, with a close friend, or some new friends brings much excitement and adrenaline. Suddenly, a new home and independence causes you to start changing up your life. You may become more risky, adventurous, or a new style and attitude may emerge. Life becomes spontaneous and fresh. Be aware that this is where growth happens and new ideas and thoughts emerge, but also be aware that this kind of thinking is also the culprit for terrible mistakes. Be careful.
Hopefully, this article really sealed the deal for you and you already began researching study abroad trips. I listed (mainly) positive things that are very real and can actually happen. Studying abroad is not some magical fantasy, you can really do it. Many colleges have a diverse array of study abroad trips, or if you are in high school I would recommend SPI over the summer. There is just so much out there to experience that you can’t do from your living room couch.
