1. The Windmill Cafe

21231 E Cliff Dr., Santa Cruz, California 95062

My personal favorite, The Windmill Cafe, is a small, locally owned restaurant, right off of East Cliff Drive. It's a little far from campus and very hard to get to by bus, but this is a great find for anyone who has a car. Because it's far away from areas like downtown or the boardwalk, The Windmill Cafe is rarely crowded, and its patrons are often local residents, rather then college students. With free Wi-Fi, great coffee and delicious food, it's the perfect place to study for exams.

2. The Abbey

350 Mission St., Santa Cruz, California 95060

Now, maybe it's just my caffeine addiction talking, but I always found cafes to be the best places to study. Like The Windmill Cafe, The Abbey provides free Wi-Fi and refillable coffee in a very cozy setting. This cafe is right off of High Street and Highland and is easy to get to using the 10 Metro. If you choose to study here, I recommend coming on off hours because the cafe can get very crowded in the afternoons.

3. McHenry Library

1156 High St., Santa Cruz, California 95064

This one is really a no brainer. Every college student knows that the on-campus library is the prime location to study during finals week. If you happen to get lucky and you are able to find a work station, then you'll be surrounded by copious amounts of students studying like mad men, which can be incredibly motivating. There's also something really comforting about being able to show up in your pajamas without anyone thinking twice about it.

4. Messiah Lutheran Church

801 High St., Santa Cruz, California 95060

Right off of High Street is a chain of churches that are very accommodating to UCSC students. Many of them provide parking or host things like study breaks for the student body. The Messiah Lutheran Church is opening up a space to the public during finals week as a service to the community and their college-affiliated patrons. This is open to everyone, and you do not need to have any religious affiliation to use their facilities.

5. Lulu's at the Octagon

118 Cooper St., Santa Cruz, California 95060

I firmly believe that latte art can put a smile on anyone's face. There's something about getting a nice cup of coffee with a pretty design that rejuvenates your senses and increases productivity. If you feel the same way, then Lulu's is a great place to get your fix. Open until 7 p.m., this cafe is right in the middle of downtown Santa Cruz. It's a great place to stop and study between running errands in town.

6. Oakes Learning Center

1156 High St., Santa Cruz, California 95064

Another on-campus option, the Oakes Learning Center is a great, quiet place to go study. They're open until 2 a.m. during finals and provide open spaces for group study sessions or individuals working. As it is on campus, a lot of TA's and tutors are comfortable meeting here, so if you happen to be planning a meeting to go over course material, I would recommend suggesting this location.

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
