Being a college student is very stressful. You might work, you might have a heavy course load, plus you have to balance your social life on top of it all. Going through your general education courses is easy, but taking classes that are major specific is a bit of a challenge.
Some of us are lucky: you've known what you've wanted to do your whole life.
Some of us aren't that lucky.
Many of us are left questioning majors AND switching majors up to two, maybe even three or four times.
I started college as undecided and on my orientation day, I said I wanted to go into Communication. I didn't really know why I chose Communication other than I love working with people. I took an intro to communication class which I absolutely loved, but something just wasn't clicking. It could have been because it was an 8 AM, but sometimes you just get those feelings that you can't shake.
So I switched my major to Journalism. I loved writing and I loved helping get the news out to people. I put my minor down as broadcasting. Why? I wanted to be on the big screen. I wanted to be on the news like Ginger Zee from Good Morning America. I wanted to be the next Guiliana Rancic from E! News. But something still wasn't clicking with me. I loved my two journalism classes I took and I adored my TV production class, but I felt distant from myself.
Now, let me put this out there: having dreams is a good thing. Reaching for the stars is a bold and spectacular thing to do. BEING YOU is a courageous thing to do. You need to study what you love, so you end up in a field of your liking.
I've never been one to say, "I want to study this so I make that much money."
No.
I've always been the one that says, "Do what you love, no matter the cost."
I thought I was doing what I loved by writing and going into broadcast. But, come to find out, there was something I loved more than those things.
I have always loved helping people, I've always been a leader at my school and in clubs and sports, I've always been 100% organized and excited to take on new projects and plan events. That is exactly what my new major will allow me to do with my future career.
My major is now Human Resource Development and I am utterly happy with that.
I can work basically anywhere I want to. All places need HR people. With this career path, I could possibly hire and recruit people to work for certain companies or businesses. This allows me to not give up my love for broadcast and writing either. I could work for a company that specializes in those types of things. I'm getting the best of both worlds.
Sometimes, your future is right under your toes and you don't even know it.
If you're like me and you don't know exactly what you want to do with your life, take a step back. Think about what brings you the most joy. Don't forget about your dreams, but also remember what you love.
I love helping people. I love being around people. I love working until everything is perfect. I love being organized. I love to write. I love media. And I finally found a major that will allow me to pursue all of my passions in one.
