Study Abroad, Get Lost, Find Yourself

Everyone says get lost and find yourself. Studying abroad gives your one of very few chances to truly get lost, explore the world, all while learning more about your studies and yourself. So why not study abroad, get lost, and find yourself.

Let the world be your classroom. Seeing the world is one thing I have always love to do. Traveling to me gives you the chance to experience life from another perspective, broadening your mind to see how someone else lives. I have been blessed in my life to travel to over nine countries and have learned something new every time. However, nothing can compare to the experiences I had during my study abroad. I can truly say I came back as a completely new person.

This summer I did a short-term study abroad to Costa Rica and honestly, I did not want to come back. I participated in the Dynamics of Communities in Costa Rica Sociology program with Dr. Porter. Our travel group consisted of five women along with our professor and her children. Our assignment throughout the trip was to do ethnographic research on our own individual paper topics and write a research paper on it. So I had no choice other than to dive into the Costa Rican culture. Throughout this trip, I grew as a person, as a Christain, and as a student. I got to have fun, learn and grow all while gaining credits to further my future endeavors. There will be nothing else that will give you that chance.

While I was away I got to experience what people out of the United States thought about us. I got to experience life without all the things we feel like we need. While I was away, I learned to calm down and slow down. While I was away, I learned to enjoy life. And I came back to the United States with relationships and experiences that I will carry with me my entire life. It is something that although it is scary, it is completely worth every moment of it.

Most students think about doing a study abroad but never take that leap of faith. Whether it be financial reasons or just not enough time, I want to encourage you to just go for it. Do not let all of life's struggles and roadblocks deter you from the experience of a lifetime. There is nothing more amazing then exploring the unknown and having it literally be your classroom. Take that chance to experience a holistic version of learning, instead of sitting and listening to endless lectures. It will push you to grow as a person, a student, a family member, and so much more. Take that chance that we have at here JMU, expanded your resume and your mind.

Here at JMU, we have access to tons of opportunities to access this amazing experience. Center for Global Engagement (CGE) offers tons of study abroad choices from short-term to semester long that travel all over the world. Check out JMU's Center for Global Engagement web page, and look through the many study abroad programs that are offered.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
