Doing Recreational Clubs In College Doesn't Compare To Balancing School Work And Actual Work

Doing Recreational Clubs In College Doesn't Compare To Balancing School Work And Actual Work

Them: ''I'm just so tired. I went to my book club this weekend, then out to brunch, and then to a darty, and so I've just been overwhelmed with trying to finish my papers on time.''

Me: ''Oh wow, yeah you totally must be stressed.''

Them: ''You have no idea.''

If ever there was a time for a meme, it is now.

The number of times I hear fellow classmates complain about how stressed they are with school work while still managing to make time to go to the bar on Friday and go to their weekly club meetings is innumerable.

I truly envy your lifestyle if you are able to frequent social gatherings and prioritize your social clubs because I can't fathom what it is like to be a college student and NOT have to worry about if you have enough money to pay your insurance, car payments, transportation fees, and other bills while simultaneously making sure you can balance your coursework.

I have two jobs, one internship, and I am a full-time college student. I've never gone to a party, never have joined a club because it interests me, and have never spent a day (at least during the academic year) where I wasn't actively finishing up some assignment, whether it be work related or school related.

And yet, somehow, in the minds of my peers, they're the ones struggling to get through college because their privileged plate is overflowing.

All I ever think about it is if I've made enough money for the week to cover my bills and put some money towards my savings so that I can hopefully pay off my college debt, or whether or not I'll be able to get more than 5 hours of sleep after finishing my assignments. Yet most of my peers are concerned with whether or not they can rage for three days and still wake up in time for class. I mean, kudos to you that you have not a care in the world, but don't you ever feel a bit embarrassed knowing the only thing you can surmount your college experience to is the fact that you could drink 10 beers on a Sunday night and still get an A on that paper? Are you even slightly ashamed that if you spend all of your allowance on this weekends' escapades, you're going to have to beg your parents for more money because you still can't provide anything for yourself?

So please, just because you're out here struggling to find time to do your paper after fighting that horrendous hangover this weekend for the 100th time this semester, don't you dare complain that you're stressed simply because you're too privileged to have to actually be an adult and learn how to properly manage your time.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
