If there is anything that students agree with, it is that college can be a life-changing experience. From the moment you step on campus, you are instantly transported into a realm that is completely different than the one you grew up with. As such, in an effort to shed light onto the life of a college student, here is a list compiled of my own experiences to provide some tips and tricks to this next part of your life. And, who knows, maybe with a little hard work and courage, your time at college will be just as magical (even if you are not destined to fight a dark wizard over an eight-movie franchise).
1. Your first week of college will be filled with sleepless nights and nervous jitters.
Whether you are 10 minutes from home or halfway across the country, everybody gets nervous at the thought of new experiences. With that in my mind, your specific college may have a few days or a week set aside with different activities or icebreakers for everyone to take part in. Although it is important to take part in these activities, as they offer a chance to make lifelong connections with others and the campus you will be a part of, remember to also take some time for yourself to relax.
2. It's okay to ask for directions to a building or classroom.
If you are anything like me, one of the most embarrassing moments lies in walking into a classroom 20 minutes late because, by some coincidence, we became lost on the way. Although it might seem a daunting task at first to go up to someone and ask how to get somewhere, it might just save you some trouble in the long run.
3. Your teachers are not your enemies.
Alright, so maybe their first impression wasn't the greatest or their tests are rather hard, but many of your professors want to see you grow as both a student and individual. Although it may seem that they don't care about your success in their class, taking the time to reach out to them may show you a deeper look into their lives or aspirations.4. Balancing out school work, social events and a sleep schedule is the key to success.
There will be times during your college experience that you feel overwhelmed with everything happening around you. Although it is important to focus on your education to make sure you learn all that you need to know for life outside of the classroom, it is also essential to build connections with those around you. As well, finding time for yourself is essential to this happiness.
5. Free food to college students is like kryptonite to Superman.
It is our greatest weakness as well as our greatest strength. Whenever free food is offered, expect a great portion of the school to be there to receive it. Also, who likes paying for food when you can get it for free?6. Your friends are your greatest allies and supporters.
Friends will come in all personalities and backgrounds, and it is up to us to make sure we find the right ones for us during this time period. Cherishing memories together will be your greatest asset during college and knowing that there are people who support you in your endeavors will make the experience that much better.
Although we may be unable to produce patronus charms or mix love potions, this story of love and friendship can be used to show the lives we live as college students as well as the breathtakingly beautiful journey we call life.
