The university has been making some big changes lately. Faculty and staff are being elected into new positions as we speak. The former president, Sr. Margaret Carney, has just elected a new chief financial officer, Nancy K. Taylor, this past Thursday to handle our school’s financial decisions. But who is she? Looking at the news webpage on the university’s website, we don’t get much information about who she is and what she’ll be doing for the school.
“But I’m a college student! I don’t care about these people! They don’t affect my personal life, so why should I care?”
Sure, I can admit, all the boring legislative news we hear these days in our newspapers really isn’t appealing. It isn’t appealing because we are young individuals still trying to figure out ourselves and what we want in our lives. Our education is our prime concern. It’s what we’re here for: to get a degree so we can get a job to make money. Right now, it’s all about surviving. I think we do recognize in some ways the struggles we are going to face. We see that our economy is going down, taxes are being raised, people are falling into debt, and the way our presidential election is going just makes us see that our country doesn’t know what it is doing.
When it comes to our school, however, our freshman enrollment is going down the drain. Because of the fact that our private university mostly runs off of alumni donations and student funding, we aren’t able to get what we need. The point? Our school’s success affects our college experience by changing the way our university works. So, let’s ask ourselves, why should we care?
Let’s start with the lack of technology in our school libraries and classroom. How about the lack of healthier foods in the Hickey? What about how the dorm room conditions are falling apart as we speak? The lack of air conditioning and proper heating? Our Wi-Fi services? The lack of newer textbooks? We aren’t the most highly innovative school in the country, but we definitely could use more improvement.
So, how do we know our school is making the right decisions for us? It seems like things are getting worse, but I think one of the biggest things we should be concerned about besides our well-being is who’s in charge of our well-being. We are the prime benefactors of this school’s success, so why aren’t we being educated about who these people are? Sure, we are getting an education. We are learning things that always appear completely useless to us. However, we aren’t being educated about how our world works.
