When Your Life Seems Pretty Great, But Something Is Still Missing

A note to those who have gotten so used to routine.

When Your Life Seems Pretty Great, But Something Is Still Missing

There comes a point in everyone’s life where you’re just... sort of cruising. Everything seems to be going pretty okay. Everyone around you is generally healthy, you have a pretty solid support system, and you’re working towards your goals and enjoying life.

I'm at this point in my life right now.

Life is going my way. Nothing too exciting, and nothing too stressful. It’s been a while since I’ve been at this point in my life. Summer just began, I’m starting my full-time camp job soon, I got a gym membership and I’m spending time with people I love. I sort of don’t know what to do with myself when I have no essays or projects to be working on; I always feel so weird when summer starts. I wake up every day and crave for something more, something exciting.

We live in a society where nothing is ever quite “enough” for us. We never have enough clothes, enough friends, enough food or enough self-care. My day-to-day life is going pretty well, but something still seems like it’s missing. There’s a piece of my heart that has a hole that needs to be fulfilled. The other day, my coworker told me a story of when she and her fiancé took a spontaneous trip to Gatlinburg after a bad day at work. She told me that any chance that she gets a few days off, she will go and travel somewhere — whether that be a new store or a new state. She inspired me to write this article. After having that conversation with her, I did some serious reflecting…

Are you living or just surviving?

We all get so caught up in living a routine life. We go from spontaneously building forts as kids to a regime of wake up-work-eat-sleep. So I decided that this “missing” piece in my life is truly just going out of my comfort zone and ordinary life and doing something new. I admire people who live life like this. As my life is unfolding at a steady pace right now, I need to take this opportunity to live it to the fullest. So as you’re reading this, think about something big or small that you could do today that would make you feel a little more alive, a little more excited and grateful to live the life you do.

Hug your mom, bake your dog some treats, bring your significant other flowers, smile at a stranger, read a book, call a distant family member or take yourself to Starbucks. There are so many things in our lives that we simply just don’t get around to doing simply because we are so used to routine. Summer is just starting: get up and do something. I challenge you to live the beautiful life that you do, not just survive through it.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
