21 Things I'm Struggling To Live Without

There's just nothing like home.

21 Things I'm Struggling To Live Without

To quote Joni Mitchell, “don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone?” Yes, Joni, it does. The longer I’ve been here and the more time I spend settled, the more things I realize I miss desperately. Here are a few on my mind right now (in no particular order).

  1. Autumn in New York – (For my European friends, that’s New York State, not NYC.) October is a month of brilliant red, yellow, and orange hues and a crisp breeze. There’s nothing like the way the trees light up in such a brilliant flame. (For my Californian friends, no, not actual fire.)
  2. Driving (with American fuel prices) – Some weeks I never leave the east side of Glasgow. It will no longer surprise me when I meet Manhattan residents that consider Poughkeepsie up-state.
  3. The Sun – They weren’t kidding. It’s always cloudy, raining or both here. Always.
  4. Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives – American food, not you, Guy Fieri. That means burgers, ribs, salads, grilled cheese, milkshakes, Reubens, NY style pizza, waffles, pancakes, BLTs, muffins, pies, mac n’ cheese, hot dogs… I could go on.
  5. Christopher – An incredible man of God I’m too lucky to have. A life he’s a part of is just easier. Simpler. Happier. Better.
  6. Stewart’s – “Gas station that sells ice cream” doesn’t even come close to articulating the beauty that is Stewart’s.
  7. Coffee Shops – It’s all about coffee’s prissy, goodie-two-shoes, big sister tea in the UK. None of these tea houses could hold a match to Park Bros., “Cathaccinos”, or Cathy honestly.
  8. Customer Service – In the UK, customer service is nonexistent unless they’re trying to replicate our American atmosphere. Their best attempt looks like not caring that you’re there or need anything. Forget discounts because you didn’t enjoy your visit.
  9. Fresh Produce – Glasgow ranks in as the UK's "unhealthiest" city. Finding deep fried candy bars is easier than finding a farmer's market.
  10. Katelyn – I find it quite impossible to articulate what this girl means to me or the void in my life when she’s not there. All I know is that every day, all day I’m missing her quirks, support, love, voice, rants, snacks, and laugh.
  11. Open Spaces – For one, the Adirondacks. But really…just grass. I miss grass.
  12. (Affordable) Worldly Cuisine – SUSHI. Thai. TexMex. Nachos. All I’m getting here is Fish ‘n Chips and unnecessarily fried foods.
  13. Church – This shout-out is for my CFC family. The movement happening in the NoCo is incredible and I miss being a part of it.
  14. Walmart – Errand running gets so much more complicated when there’s a different store for literally everything you need. I'd rather not deal with it at all.
  15. 24-hour Access to What I Need – If it’s after 5PM your options are limited. If it’s after 8PM you better suck it up and wait ‘til morning. Sometimes I need ice cream at 2AM ok?!?
  16. Hayrides, Apple Picking, Apple Cider, Apple Cider Donuts and Pumpkin Patches – Timeless. Rachel Long, this one’s for you.
  17. Thanksgiving and Halloween – They’ve had Christmas decorations out for a little bit already. They just skip all of the holidays. Bank holidays and Christmas. That’s it.
  18. The American Dollar – I’m pretty tired of losing a third of my money on every purchase (though the pound value is still dropping slowly, thanks, Brexit).
  19. Cookies – The UK sweets game is sorely lacking despite the cult-like following behind The Great British Bake-off. All I'm getting is tea and dry biscuits. Biscuits are not cookies.
  20. My bed – I’ve slept on couches, futons, beds with broken springs, and even the floor for the past 4 months. I’ll never take my mattress for granted again.
  21. Family – I consider my mom to be one of my closest friends and I miss watching my siblings grow every day. But we all know this one is really about my dog.

An overwhelming majority of the things I miss revolve around food. But so does America so I don't see anything out of the ordinary there. Trying to enjoy the time I have left but really missing the little things that make home...home.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
