The Struggles of Having Out of State Best Friends

Seven things about having out-of-state best friends.

The Struggles of Having Out of State Best Friends

We all walk into college and wonder what our majors are going to be like, what our roommate is going to like and what sort of friends will we make. But some of the best friends you will meet aren't always the ones you've been best friends with since you were seven playing t-ball together with. Some of your best friends will be states near by, or across the country when you hit college. And there are always struggles that go along with that.

1. Sometimes there's a time change.

When everyone comes back from break, you could be completely fine while your friend over there could be clutching a Red Bull for dear life trying to stay awake so you can catch one more episode of How to Get Away With Murder.

2. The slang.

Different words have different meanings in a lot of places. No matter where you go, there is always that one person who has to correct your slang or tilt their head and say "Whaa?". And it always brings on a funny twist when you don't know what the slang is.

3. Picking up on the slang.

I made a lot of my friends say "wicked" and they get weird looks when they go home. Picking on the slang is just as weird as not know what your friend is talking about.

4. The distance during breaks.

No longer can you go from your room and down the hall to the left to see your friend from Nebraska. You need to schedule a time or text but its hard when you both have separate lives when you're home rather than at school. It's a lot harder to tell a juicy store over text or a phone call rather than walking into their room and spilling your guts.

5. Not knowing what they are talking about.

Different regions have different stores or chains so not everyone knows what you're talking about when you mention common things back at home. "So I went to the In-N-Out the other day..." "Is that a convenience store?"

6. The good bye.

The goodbye is always the hardest thing to do. Doesn't matter if its for a couple weeks or for the entire summer. Saying goodbye to your best when the semester ends is extremely hard. You can't get into the fun trouble you got in while you were together at school. Those inside jokes mean nothing to you're friends at home who have no clue what you're talking out. But you wouldn't change having them in your life for the world. You know they made you a better person or just made your year(s) even better.

7. The reunite.

The reunite is something like a story book. You can see each other and both light up and scream and give each other the biggest hug imaginable and then go straight into how you were before the break and act like nothings happened.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
