10 Struggles Of Starting A New Semester

And suddenly I wish I was back on break…

In This Article:

After a long winter break, everyone is ready to come back to school. The freedom, parties, and friends were all deeply missed, and everyone is excited to get back to college life. However, with every positive, there are some negatives about starting another semester.

Here's a list of a few things that suck about starting a new semester at college:

1. Buying textbooks

New semester, same textbook debt. I still do not understand why textbooks are so expensive. IF YOU'RE PAYING FOR THE CLASS, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THE BOOK. But shout-out to the teachers who know textbooks cost a ridiculous amount of money and pick cheap textbooks.

2. New schedule

This is annoying because you have to create a whole new routine. You have to figure out when you have to leave your room to go to class, and when you should go to the gym. It's not a hard process, but it's annoying to have to figure out a new schedule every semester.

3. Finding the classrooms

I don't know if this is just a me thing, but I always panic that I'm not going to be able to find the classroom. I end up leaving my room thirty minutes before class just so I make sure I have enough time to find the classroom. Even though every time I find the classroom no problem. Maybe one day I will outgrow this habit, but not today.

4. Making new friends

Having to make new friends in classes is so stressful. You have to find people who you think will be cool and willing to work with you and study together. But getting to that point takes so much time. It also doesn't help if you're socially awkward. *cough* me *cough*

5. New teachers

You did all your research, you read every RateMyProfessor entry, and you're convinced this professor is cool. However, you're still afraid they are going to be terrible and super hard with grading. You also have to figure out how they handle notes, phones in class, attendance, etc. The list is endless really.

6. "Name, major, and fun fact"

THE GODDAMN ICEBREAKERS. OH MY GOODNESS. I cannot express how much I hate icebreakers. The idea of having to play a game or talk with these random people makes me sweat. I also don't think they break the awkwardness of the first day as much as teachers think they do. I am just too socially awkward for this.

7. Professors teaching on the first day

All I have to say is, HOW DARE YOU. We have the whole semester to start learning, you can't give us one class?! Do YOU really wanna teach us today? This is a free pass for everyone involved. Just know that if you start teaching during syllabus week, you are hated and off to a bad start.

8. The syllabus

There are two kinds of people in the world: one's who have not looked at the syllabus yet and probably never will, and the ones who have it printed it out with a highlighter in hand on the first day of class.

9. Getting back into the school mindset

Getting back into the mentality of having to learn is always a struggle. Coming back from that long break and suddenly realizing that you have to go back to learning takes time. It's a process you definitely have to ease yourself back into, and if you have a job at school, that might also take some time to readjust to again. Remember, you can do it!

10. Realizing this semester is going to be harder than you thought

You sit down ready and open-minded for this new semester. The professor starts to go over the syllabus and s*** hits the fan. It's then you realize that this is not going to be as "easy" as you anticipated. It's in that moment you realize this is your life for the next three months. How many days till spring break?? RIP.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
