The world of an overachiever is very different from a normal person. Statistically, people with a lot on their plates are more likely to volunteer than those who have a lot of free time. You are involved in five different organizations, mastered the art of multi-tasking, and stress levels are most likely higher than the average person. But you get things done promptly (because you have more things to do).
Here are some things that perpetually busy people can relate to:
1. Constantly going over the schedule for the day in your head
You could be in a class, meeting or listening to a friend, but you’re mentally preoccupied. You don’t mean to be distracted but there’s so much happening at once that you have to go over the schedule so you don’t forget.
2. You say "I can't I have ____" quite often
A friend asks to meet for brunch but there’s an essay you have to write or you are attending your sorority’s philanthropy event. You don’t realize how many events are planned consecutively until you check your calendar.
3. To-do lists and planners are your best friends
To-do lists and planners are very helpful if you are forgetful. They are always there when you need a reminder, to keep you organized and just make you a better person. With so many events in your calendar, you have to strategically plan times to jump from one meeting in the morning to a birthday party in the afternoon to a social event in the evening.
4. Family complains that you're never at home
Living at home does not mean that you will frequently see your family members. And every time you are home, your dad lectures you on how you need to stop being so busy. But you never listen because how else are you going to learn to be independent? So you just keep doing your thing.
5. Family functions are planned around your schedule
It’s your nephew’s first birthday but you have a meeting planned in the morning. But it's not like you purposely choose work over family. The only way you could be present at a family gathering is if they tell you the date and time of the event in advance. And if you are free, it's relaxing to celebrate with your family again.
6. Confused on how you managed keeping friendships/relationships
You are happy that you still have friends to hang out with despite having a busy schedule. They know the gist of your schedule so they know to work around it. I have to give a lot of credit to those who maintain a relationship when you are constantly on the go. You barely have time for yourself, so how do they have time for a significant other?
7. You don't know what to do when you're not busy
Once in a while you get a chance to take a break for a second. Your body is so used to not resting that once you have a little free time, you find something new to add to your schedule.
8. Mentally beating yourself up for signing up for so many things
Why did I join so many clubs and hold office positions for them? Why am I double majoring and minoring? The pressures of having a full resume is often the reason why you are so involved. It's refreshing to keep your mind preoccupied but sometimes it's exhausting trying to keep up with the workload.
9. Spontaneity is not your thing
You’re so used to having things planned out that when someone suggests doing something spontaneous it gives you anxiety because it wasn't in your original plans.
10. Hiding when you finally have a day or week of no plans
At last, a day/week with a clear schedule. How do you relax? You just hide in your room and hibernate from society. These are the days you use to rejuvenate in order to have the energy needed to be constantly active.
11. The only free time is when you sleep
After a very long day, the last thing to do on your list is jump in your bed and get some shut eye.
