Everybody loves summertime! Sand, sun, warm weather and less clothes. These things are all great, except for those of us who have pale skin. Here are some things you struggle with if you have pale or sensitive skin:
Your friends always want to go to the beach.
Summertime is all about beaching it! It’s relaxing to lather up in tanning oil and lay in the sun. Your friends are eager to go, but you’re just as eager to avoid sunburn. Tanning oil is your worst enemy and direct sunlight is pretty high on the list as well. You want to have fun and take cute pictures and make memories with your friends, but you don’t want to be in pain for days after because of it. The struggle is so real.
You have to put on sunscreen to go anywhere.
Running up to the store? Sunscreen. Walking the dog? Sunscreen. Family barbecue? Sunscreen. Swimming? Sunscreen applied at least twenty times during. If not wearing sunscreen, long sleeves or hats are definitely necessary.
You can’t fake tan.
Your skin is too fragile for constant exposure to the brutal sun, but you still want to be tan. You could hop in a tanning bed, but you’d still probably have to use sunscreen to avoid being burnt. So how about a spray tan? No sun, no UV rays. Most of the time, this option doesn’t work either. A good but of us with really pale or sensitive skin can’t pull off spray tan look. It may look good on some people, but on us, it doesn’t. The colors are usually too sharp of a contrast and look unnatural and can even irritate our skin.
You can’t wear white clothes. Or black ones, for that matter.
Well, you can, but you probably look like a ghost in white. Often, it’s too close to your skin tone to look appealing. Black contrasts too much and makes your paleness even more evident. Shopping can be a bit difficult for those of us with pale skin.
We always try to tan, despite knowing we can’t.
We’ll think, “Maybe my skin has changed over the past few months! I should try to tan.” We later regret that decision when it is reaffirmed that our skin only has two colors: white or red. Sunburn is inevitable for us, which is both unfortunate and painful.
You are constantly told how pale you are.
Yes, we know. We're pale. This isn't the first time someone has insinuated that you "need some sun" and it definitely won't be the last.
In a society that admires tan skin, having pale skin can be irritating. It can also be painful, considering how sensitive pale skin is to the sunlight. It's definitely a struggle to care for pale or sensitive skin.
