Struggles of Singing in the Car

I'm not just a person driving a car. I'm a performer.

Cool of the Wild

If anyone has ever seen me driving around by myself, you probably were very confused. Normally, I'm a fairly shy, reserved person. But, when I'm driving by myself, a forgotten part of myself emerges. That part of myself is my 'inner rock star.' This whole different side of myself typically only emerges when I'm alone driving around in my car. I sing, I dance, I perform. I should start charging people whenever they happen to witness this mobile performance driving around.

Being a pop/rock star in my free time has it's struggles though. Here are a few of the struggles that I experience in this career choice. Maybe you can relate to a few of them.

People don't understand why you're totally fine (even a little bit excited) to drive by yourself.

Rarely are we ever actually completely alone. When you get offered the opportunity to have that alone time in the car, where you can really let lose and allow your inner pop star to emerge, you take it without hesitation. "No, that's ok. I'll just meet you there" is a phrase you're ok with using because it means you have approximately 15-30 minutes to rock out without worrying about other people judging you.

When you do have a solid group of friends though, you're not embarrassed to let loose. Together you create the world's most amazing singing group that ever was.

There's no better feeling that finding a group of people you can jam with. When you guys actually sound pretty good together, it's just a bonus. You start considering trying out for some reality singing contest for a minute. Your harmonies are just so spot on.

You've got a playlist in your phone specifically for songs to sing in the car.

It's a tough job filtering through all of those albums, all of those songs to find the perfect ones that you want to just belt out. Once you've got that playlist made though, you're ready. Every time you get into your car, you immediately go to that playlist and get ready to give the performance of your life.

Your performance stage isn't the most conventional one, so sometimes you get some weird looks.

Often those weird looks are similar to:

But these poor people don't seem to realize that they are in the presence of a star. It's okay. You're more than willing to enlighten them. Brush off the weird look, make solid eye contact with them and follow Jesse from Pitch Perfect.

He's not ashamed at all. You shouldn't be either! By the end of the movie, Jesse and the person he was serenading actually ended up dating too. So really if you don't seize the opportunity to belt out a few notes to this unsuspecting bystander, you might be missing out majorly.

You don't really get the recognition you probably deserve because you don't just sing while you drive. You perform.

You know exactly where all of the cameras are in your car as you film your music video. You've got your perfect "fierce" face on. Your dance moves are somewhat limited because you're driving, but you're willing to work with what you've got. Bring on the screaming fans, the back up dancers, the whole deal. You're ready.

Soon people are going to start realizing what a star you are. And you're not sure you can handle that kind of attention.

Blending in is hard when you're an icon. Or a future icon. It's only a matter of time before some famous singer or music producer spots you through your tinted car windows, putting your heart and soul out there. They'll undoubtedly recruit you and your life will change. For now, your content to perform to your air freshener and old water bottles in the back seat.

Sometimes when bad things happen, the only thing that can really make you feel better is going for a drive and just singing your heart out.

The best therapy is some alone time, tears, and a great soundtrack to sing along to. Sometimes you just need to belt out all of your feelings in song. That's nothing to be embarrassed about. Everyone does it. You're a star, so it's your right.

No, but really.

Singing in the car isn't just something you do. It's a hobby. It's a lifestyle. Don't be embarrassed or afraid to embrace that part of yourself. Let your inner pop star free because sometimes you just need to let loose and have fun. Music is a beautiful thing and you should enjoy it in all of it's capacities.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
