Moving from New York to Florida for college has given me such a fresh outlook on life. The two lifestyles are completely different and it has definitely shaped me for the better. I have met so many people, seen interesting things and have heard some strange perspectives. However, a huge downside to Florida is the weather.
You might think I'm crazy for saying that, but hear me out. Sure, it is always sunny and you can go to the beach, but fall is not a season you can truly celebrate. It feels weird to do fall activities when it isn't chilly, and even more weird to see people dressed in fall fashion when it is 90 degrees outside. So here's a complete list of fall struggles in Florida.
1. Hot Drinks
It was always nice to leave a chilly high school football game and get a hot drink, but now it is so hot out, even at night. How do people drink this stuff all the time in the south?
2. Boots
Okay this is something that I really do not understand. I walk around campus in flip flops or sneakers and I sweat. I have seen people in leggings, high wool socks and Uggs at any temperature. Someone please explain to me how this is comfortable.
3. Socks
I cannot emphasize this enough. How does one wear these in this weather?
4. Leaves
This is one that Floridans don't necessarily do or are able to do, but it is the thing I miss the most. Raking leaves and jumping into them was so much fun as a child and even as an adult. I feel bad for all of the people who have never enjoyed this.
5. Bundling up for Halloween
Growing up, I was literally in any costume that kept me warm. Sometimes, it would get so cold that I would take breaks and go back home just to stay alive. Frostbite was real, even in fall. Though it was torture, let's be honest, anyone from up north misses it.
Overall, moving to a new state with different weather patterns is hard on a lot of people, whether it is going to college or for a career change. Nostalgia is a tough thing to deal with sometimes and when it comes to seasons, just know you can always go home whenever you need to. Just remember the good times, and it really isn't all that bad to throw on a scarf once in a while, even if it is 80 degrees outside.
