I am a double major. Don’t ask me why I decided to double major, but I did. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but then I started looking at my four year plan…and then I wanted to cried. The amount of classes I need to take to make sure that I graduate on time is stressful and kind of intimidating. It’s a struggle and a lot of questions on what to do.
1. “What classes do I need to take?”
If you are smart enough, you would go to your school’s website and look up all the classes in your two majors. Then cry at the sight at the amount of what you need to take. Dry up your tears and talk to your adviser. They will help you get things settled, trust me.
2. The Requirements
If you think that your one major has a ton of requirements, then adding a double major is just double that. You basically drown in all of the classes. So many classes, so little time.
3. Scheduling Problems
“You need to take this class and it’s only at 8am. This class is already filled and you absolutely need this class to graduate on time. This one has a prerequisite that you don’t have yet. These two classes are at the same time and you need both for each of your major. Even if you hate this class and/or professor it’s totally open and fits with your schedule.”
4. How to balance work and classes while maintaining a social life and reminding people you exist.
You don’t…it’s impossible.
5. Reading and writing become the enemy.
Even if you are an English major, reading and writing won’t be fun until you are actually assigned something you love (and that’s very rare…trust me).
6. Buying textbooks.
I can find most of my book online because they are mostly novels (English Major), but for my other textbooks, I am not that lucky.
7. You question your double major.
“Is a double major really important? Yes…yes it is”
8. You don’t look cute for class.
Just pack away your dresses, skirts, and fancy shirts. Sweatpants and hoodies are your friends now.
9. Coffee.
If you don’t like it…you need to learn to love it.
As much as I complain about my double major, it will be worth it in the end. I will be thanking your professors that pushed me to take another major. Having a double major makes you insanely strong and smart. It takes a lot to be a double major.
