The Struggles of Having a Mostly Black Wardrobe

When one black t-shirt is not enough.

I remember the exact moment I became addicted to a full black wardrobe. In eighth grade I bought my first pair of black jeans. I remember questioning if I should wear a pink cute shirt or a black slinky cardigan and tank. Little did I know, that this would be the beginning of an obsession. If I was to look at my closet now any color would be few and far between. As an avid black clothing connoisseur, I've learned that all black everyday has its set backs.

1. Summer is HOT

Of course this is basically par for the course, adding sun soaking black to the mix only makes the situation worse. On the bright side, the black will hide the sweat that is seeping into your clothes, but it may be best to leave the foundation at home on especially hot days.

2. Matching Black is More Difficult Than Expected.

Raven, midnight, ebony, charcoal and onyx are all completely different colors of black. If you pair a charcoal shirt with a pair of ebony pants something will just be "off."

3. The attempts of family members to brighten your wardrobe.

Mom and dad, this is not a phase. From holidays to family reunions there is bound to be at least one aunt or grandparent who just feels compelled to ask, "Wouldn't some color be nice?" Sometimes, the best response to this is to just bite your tongue and giggle about how ridiculous a suggestion that is.

4. Every Facial Expression Looks Angry.

It must be all the black that amplifies an RBF. As a super friendly person, it may come as a surprise to how many people think you are stuck up or even afraid of you. It is difficult to have to remind yourself and put in the extra effort to not appear like you are about to murder someone.

5. Wearing a Dark Lipstick is Committing to Looking Goth for a Day

While vampy looks are in right now, it is not suggested that dark lips and black clothes be worn for everyday fare. I say, wear that NYX Matte Lip Cream and black babydoll dress proudly.

6. Trying to find that ONE Black T-Shirt

It is a struggle to dig through an endless amount of black t-shirts with different neck lines only to find the one you really wanted is unwashed.

7. Getting Judging Glances

Who cares if you look like a witch right out of a '90s movie, right?

8. A Lint Roller is a Constant Need

Even if you do not own a cat there is somehow always hair all over. It's like black is just a magnet for cat and dog hair.

While there may be all these struggles of wearing only black, it is well worth it. It's a warm and comforting color. So leave all the misconceptions behind and buy yet another black crew neck t-shirt, because this one is completely different.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
