The Struggles Of Being A Short Girl
Livingly

For the girls out there who are short, or consider themselves short, you are not alone. Throughout your life, you've experienced so many things short females have to go through. I know this because I myself am that short girl. It is not easy being short; you are constantly going through challenges that make you feel more insecure about yourself. Not a day goes by where you don't wish you were tall and had the legs of a model, or wishing you would hit another growth spurt.

When it comes to opening cabinets, or reaching things that are above you, the struggle is very real. You are constantly on the tip of your toes just to grab something that is out of reach. A step stool is your best friend for life. When there is no one around to help you get that one thing on the top shelf, a step stool is the next best thing.

No matter how many times you go out with family or friends, you get mistaken as a child. This is one of the mot annoying things a short girl can go through. You might be older than a sibling but they are taller than you, you automatically get labeled as a child. Restaurants tend to become the worst places to go through because this happens way too often to you.

I cannot tell you how many times I have been the last person when walking with a group of friends. Another disadvantage of being short is not being able to walk fast. Your legs can only take you so far when you are short which is also very frustrating.

Heels become your best friend. Wearing heels give you the confidence you're are lacking when you are short. For once, you get to experience what it feels like to be tall for a few hours 'til your feet start hurting then you have to take the heels off.

You will never know what it is like to look down at people because your are constantly looking up to other people. Maybe you can get lucky and meet someone who is shorter than you are, but today that is very unlikely.

People are constantly taking aim at you because you are short. Getting lost in a crowd is one of your biggest fears. You are short therefore, it will definitely be hard to find you in a crowd of tall people or a crowd in general.

As a short girl, you will always wish you were taller. Being short gets added to your list of insecurites. We all have flaws about ourselves that we do not like, but that's how life works. Every now and then I get annoyed with my height, but I am slowly learning to accept the way I am. That is something all the short girls or guys out in the world should do. Do not let your insecurities ruin your life because it can make you miserable and no one likes to be miserable.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
