Women's History Month

The month of March is Women's History Month, and it is what sparked an idea for this article. One of my friends, (who is also an amazing Resident Assistant in the residence halls), created a bulletin board full of quotes by strong, intelligent women of history. After I talked about how awesome these women were with my roommate, I thought, "Why not find even more?"

I could talk for days about all of the inspirational women in the world and the men who are helping to fight for equality, but to sum it up in 500 words, here are a few of my favorites. Many are modern day women, but they are all an inspiration to me, regardless of the field they have excelled in.

Emma Watson

"If we stop defining ourselves by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are, we can all be freer."

Emma Watson became famous in the "Harry Potter" movies, but has continued on to share her stance on feminism and equality for all. She also speaks a lot about how media has affected how young girls think they need to act or look, when they should be able to be themselves.

Mother Teresa

"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples"

There are far too many amazing quotes by Mother Teresa, but this one speaks to anyone who feels like they can't make a difference in the world. That is far from the truth. Everyone has something they can share with the world. You never know where those ripples will reach and make an impact.

Maya Angelou

"Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women."

I think that when a woman speaks up, she speaks for many other women who might be too shy to stand up and say what they believe, and it might even spark more people to speak up against inequality.

Malala Yousafzai

"When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful."

The youngest recipient of the Noble Peace Prize, and strong advocate for education rights, knows exactly what it means to stand up for what you believe in.

Bethany Hamilton

"Life is a lot like surfing, when you caught in the impact zone, you've got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave."

After losing her arm in a shark attack, Bethany Hamilton made an inspiration journey back to competitive surfing. She kept her faith and never let her obstacles defeat her. Don't ever give up. You may be in the lowest point of your life, but there is always hope and something to look forward to, just over the next wave.

Misty Copeland

"Speak up for yourself and what you believe in. You can still be an elegant woman and be strong and powerful."

I didn't know about Misty Copeland until my roommate showed me this video of her:

She's the first African American Female Principle Dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. After being rejected as a young dancer, she never gave up and is one of the most prestigious dancers today. I love that she talks about being a graceful, elegant woman, while also standing up for your values and being powerful. Despite what today's society says, you can be both elegant and strong.

Each one of these women has inspired me in some way, and I hope they can inspire you too!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
