Stretching Your Wallet In College

Don't let college life break your wallets.

Don't you hate how that $100 your mom sent to your account four days ago is already gone? Whether it's because of food, a new tattoo or just because those shoes looked too cute, you can't seem to stretch that $100 until the following allowance deposit to your account.

According to State News, one of their college student reporters spent about $156 for a month on food. With coupons, I’ve never spent more than $50 a month on groceries at school.

There are many tricks to getting the max amount of savings for food in college.

Students spend way too much money on textbooks. Stop buying textbooks, websites like Amazon and Chegg have made it so easy and cheap to rent textbooks for a whole semester. After two years of college I have yet to spend over $40 on a text book. You can even share textbooks with a friend. A friend of mine and I split the price of a $60 textbook we needed, leaving us paying $30 each.

Go to as many campus events as you can, they usually feed students for free. These events are usually heavily advertised around campus to get people to attend.

Stop going out to eat all the time. Have you looked at these entrée prices at these restaurants? Anything more than $10 is just too much. According to Forbes, college students can save about $200 on food cost by simply cooking at home.

Start thinking of wine and beer as a luxury, meaning that they aren’t needed every week. Besides, you’re too busy to drink anyways; go work on that essay.

Many people think that coupons are for old women and mothers but that’s totally wrong. The TLC show "Extreme Couponers" is a great example of the amazing benefits of couponing. People on the show can be seen leaving grocery stores with about $1,000 worth of groceries and only paying $26.

If you aren’t a commuting student, stop going home, like, 15 times a month. That’s so much money spent on gas or public transportation. If you left something, have them mail it to you. If you miss them, call or video chat. If you need money have them send it to your account or mail a check.

Take full advantage of your birthday. I have enjoyed so much free food and discounts just by saying it’s my birthday or signing up for reward programs. This food can last you for days if you do it right.

And of course, ladies, if you really want to go out, most clubs are free for ladies before a certain time.

According to US News, 2013 graduates left college with about $28,400 in debt. There is no need to dig this hole any deeper than it already is. If there is a way to save, it’s always a good idea to jump at it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
