The Stretch From Spring Break To Summer As Told By Olivia Pope

Fall semester always seems a lot easier to get through than spring semester. Why? In college, Spring Break is much earlier than high school Spring Break, because in college, summer vacation begins in April. But that stretch of seven or eight weeks is keeping you from sitting poolside on the weekends and having a steady flow of income during the week.

As we scroll back through recent Instagram photos with the hashtag #SpringBreak2K16, we all go through these stages once returning back to campus.

The first day back.

You just spent an entire week on a beach in the Bahamas, soaking up some sun, or sleeping until noon and catching up on some great Netflix Original series, and all of a sudden it's time to go back to reality. But now you're back and have exams right away (because, for some reason, professors think you are actually going to study over break), but you don't want to step back into the routine just yet.

You try to pull strings.

Doing everything in your power, you try to avoid responsibility, schoolwork, and anything that involves concentration or a serious attitude. But when you look at the syllabus for each of your classes, it becomes clear that there isn't really room for extensions or exemption.

You realize you don't really have a choice.

You sort of have to finish out the rest of the semester -- that's why you're there in the first place, right? So after some contemplating, you embrace it openly. You have the mindset that you can finish strong.

You think you can do it all.

Sure, you can stay on top of your classes, tan at the beach, keep binging on Netflix, get your daily nap in, stay involved on campus, and go out to some parties. It won't be too much.

Reality check.

You come to the conclusion that there are only a few weeks left in the semester, and that your GPA isn't quite where you want it to be.

So you have a minor breakdown and order food.

Food is your friend. Ordering Chinese take-out or a large pizza is OK. You're sure you're going to fail the semester, but something about curling up with fast food in bed makes it bearable.

Wine helps even more.

There's no shame. Your roommates and friends are going to join you, because everyone is in that place right now. And popping the cork off a bottle helps you sit down, relax, and reevaluate how you're going to get through the next few weeks.

You call your parents to complain.

After spilling out all your problems and concerns to your mom or dad, they give you some advice and remind you that, at this point, there is less than a month left of school. So you get down to business and power through.

You make it to that last final exam, and it's finally summer.

See? It wasn't too bad! (Yes, it was, don't lie to yourself.) But you've finally finished out the semester and couldn't appreciate summer vacation more.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
