Ways to Deal With Stress

Coping mechanisms for dealing with stressors of life.

Here we are, in a new school year, and already I am beyond stressed out. Honestly, I am certain that many of us are stressed out this soon- mainly for one reason: priorities.

Before the school year even began, I had priorities stacking up. For me, it was tennis, when I found out that I could not play, I talked to my coach and made an agreement, so I can at least be a part of the team. Then, was my job at the Student Center on campus. It may take some hours away from my week to just relax and watch Netflix, but it allows me to do homework and it is a job that I like! Next, is radio. I am the engineer director at my college's radio station, and it is a job in itself, but it is something that I like to do. Lastly, my schoolwork... I have come to realize that being a double major is going to be difficult, but not impossible. Now, to some my schedule may seem like I have no time for anything, and to some others it may appear to be nothing compared to theirs (for those people I wish you luck, you got this). Overall, school gets busy and students get stressed. Here are some surprising ways to relieve stress.

1. Stress Relief from Bath and Body Works.

Although to some it may seem a little silly that this would actually work, but the scent itself is calming and relaxing to be quite honest. One can buy either the hand or body lotions, or the hand sanitizer (which is what I use) at their local Bath and Body Works store. It is cheap and smells great!

2. Listen to music.

I do not know about anyone else, but music is the way I can let whatever is bothering me, to disappear into the background. Personally, alternative music calms me down the most.. country every once in awhile, but nothing can beat that soothing sound which we call alternative. That is just a personal opinion though, some may prefer country over anything else, or maybe rock or pop. Whatever suits your fancy will work.

3. Drink some coffee or calming tea (it works wonders).

Though coffee is supposed to "energize" or "wake you up", it is a good way to relax, depending on the effects of the person. For myself, coffee can make me feel relaxed only in the morning, so just be aware of how it affects you and what time of the day. The same thing goes for tea.

4. Clean.

I know not everyone out there is a clean freak, but just try organizing your books, or cleaning your desk. You will be surprised with how much you can get done and how great it feels to be clean. This may not work for everyone, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
