A mute girl, a suspicious mother and sheriff, a Demogorgon, a secret government experiment, a terrifying flesh-eating creature and a group of twelve-year-old nerds: the ingredients needed to make the best science fiction show on Netflix. It's not every day when you get all these components together in one show, but the ingenious and brilliantly creative writers of Stranger Things have done it. Although they may have committed some mistakes in the world of film, these little errors make the show the fantastic mystery that it is.
If there was one character that won my heart the moment they appeared on screen, it was adorable and hilarious Dustin. Although he still has his baby teeth, which cause him to speak with a lisp (due to his cleidocranial dyplasia condition), it makes him the lovable character that he is, and he isn't ashamed of it! However, I cannot leave out the other colorful main characters that make up the rest of the show: Will, Lucas, Mike and Eleven (my favorite people).
Before I continue to brag though, I must say that this show had the conventional suburban 80s setting, single mother and suspicious government experiments. But no fear, the usual suspects still make the show just as thrilling as any other sci-fi production. The single mother is Joyce, played by the lovely Winona Ryder, who goes into an absolute frenzy when she realizes her son Will has gone missing while on his way home from Mike’s house the night before. This unfortunate occurrence is what gets the ball rolling into the discovery of some odd government officials. Mike and the boys then encounter Eleven, the badass, object-moving-with-her-mind, mute girl who saves them quite a few times in season one. Eleven was unfortunately taken from her mother as a baby and made into a human guinea pig to somehow spy on the Russians in a different dimension.
Crazy, right?
While all of this is going on, though, innocent Will is warped into a different dimension with the “Demogorgon,” or the flesh eating alien thing that eats anything with a pulse. In other words, Will becomes collateral damage while the government is trying to get ahold of the Russians. It's not until Will is found "dead" in a river that his mother goes into serious action.
But this is the excitement of it all! Joyce is alone, up against everyone that calls her crazy for believing that her son may still be alive despite a physical body being found. So thanks to Joyce, Chief Hopper, the rest of the boys and Eleven, the audience finally gets the truth (along with the cutest love connection between Eleven and Mike).
Seriously, though, my small description of this does not give this show any justice. But once you see this show, I assure you that your younger self will want to be on the fight against the cruel, powerful people that hurt the innocent without any remorse. It's a battle against those in power and how people from a little town can uncover the truth with just a little bit of curiousness and courage. Whether you're a fan of sci-fi thrillers or not, Stranger Things will surely turn you over.
Happy Netflix-ing!
