There will always be various catchphrases or certain variations of a line that everyone is aware of. But some of them just don't add up to me, and maybe I am reading too far into things but I find it really interesting.
Here are 7 phrases people say that don't make sense:
1. "Do what makes you uncomfortable."
Sometimes said as "step outside your comfort zone." There are multiple ways to say this phrase. I do understand what it means and agree on some level. But there is also a part of me that respects what makes people uncomfortable and I don't want to push someone to do something they don't want to do.
2. "It's raining cats and dogs."
Where did this phrase come from? Maybe if I knew the origin of it I would be less cynical about it. I just don't understand why people say this!
3. "I could care less."
It's actually I couldn't care less! I know people get confused saying this, but is it really that hard... why do we get this confused so often!? My theory is the double negative throws us off.
4. "Dead ringer."
This is usually said in place of "spot on." I honestly don't understand it though... where did this phrase come from?
5. "Head over heels."
I am not sure if people say this phrase anymore. I think it is a couple of generations before us, but it is still commonly known. This one seems so harmless and cute.
6. "Break a leg."
This is a theater reference or commonly said when someone is doing some kind of performance. Maybe it is some kind of superstition, either way, it's a bit odd.
7. "A little birdy told me."
Who is this little birdy? Who uses this phrase? Why did we decide on a "little birdy." Also, why do we change the word "bird" to "birdy"? So many questions.
