That title probably got your attention, right? I mean what kind of weirdo grabs a woman he doesn't know on the street? How rude, intrusive and scary is that? Well it happened to Gigi Hadid and some news outlets decided to paint her as the bad guy.
Here's what went down: Vitalii Sediuk, who has been known for harassing and/or assaulting other celebrities, thought it would be totally fine to run up from behind Gigi, physically lift her off the ground and maybe run away with her? I'm not sure what his next move was after he had her off the ground, but we never found out because Gigi, like the badass that she is, elbowed him in the face. And rightly so.
If it wasn't Gigi, world-famous supermodel and all-around great person, no one would've critiqued an elbow to the face in self-defense. But because Gigi is famous and the media are looking to tear her down, plenty of news sources reported the story as Gigi 'aggressively assaulting a fan'. First of all, he wasn't a fan. He's a known and documented celebu-stalker who has had trouble with the likes of Brad Pitt, Miranda Kerr and Kim Kardashian - who filed a police report against him just last week after he attempted to kiss her butt (??) during Paris Fashion Week.
This man is KNOWN for assaulting famous women (and men - don't worry Brad Pitt, I see you) yet Gigi was the one getting critiqued for responding appropriately to being assaulted by a stranger when we should be commending her. She defended herself! She had a whole team of security, but she was able to fight him off with one swift elbow to the face. If that's not girl power, what is? If that's not an incredible role model for girls, promoting self-defense, strength and independence, who should we be looking to?
So before we're quick to judge celebrities for adequately defending themselves, like take a step back and consider how we would've reacted if this was just a police report you came across in your local newspaper? Would you be surprised if it was an average-everyday woman who had the strength and bravery to defend herself against an attacker? Probably not.
