Earlier this month, the red band trailer for Universal Picture's Straight Outta Compton hit the internet and the excitement and anticipation for the summer 2015 film could not be higher.
For those that have not seen the preview, here is a look, with an introduction, including Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Kendrick Lamar.
The movie, produced by Ice Cube and Dre, depicts the rise of the Compton rap group N.W.A. (Google it if you don't what it stands for).
The group made a huge impact on the hip hop world with their controversial and explicit lyrics about their daily lives dealing with violence, gang influence, drugs, and racial issues and tensions in Compton, Calif. (an area of Los Angeles). Formed in 1986, the group included the likes of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. Their music was incredibly popular, but received heavy flak from critics saying their music was disrespectful toward women and that many of their songs glorified crime and drugs.
N.W.A was also notorious for their attitude of hatred towards the police and authority, made most evident by their hit song from 1988, "F*** tha Police." The group received letters from numerous law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, telling them to stop their style of music, which only motivated the group to perform more often and create new material.
Because of the explicitness of their music, many radio stations in the late '80s and '90s refused to play their music. Despite all of that, their debut album, Straight Outta Compton, was certified double platinum in 1992, selling over three million copies worldwide.
Their influence went beyond just their music, as many people criticized the group for being instrumental to the 1992 Los Angeles riots concerning racial tensions and police brutality among African-Americans. Their influence stretches today, as many hip hop and rap artists credit N.W.A as being the first group to popularize the gangster rap genre of music.
Whatever pundits or critics will say about the group, there is no doubt how influential N.W.A was to the music world, as they were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
Straight Outta Compton is set to premiere on August 14th.
