Story Time!

Why Instagram needs to slow down with these updates.

In the year 2010 the beautiful social media application Instagram was released. At first it was all about posting square picturesque images of whatever you wanted with a “filter” or an effect. In one week of Instagram being launched it had about 100K users signed up. As years went on from being simple and easy Instagram has now upgraded to using hashtags, upgrading filters, sharing onto other social media platform, tagging, direct messaging, being compatible with other applications, chronologically putting popular post first and now, as of August 2nd, 2016 they released the new update of posting stories.

For those who have iPhones we all know that time of the month or week when the red dot pops up with a number in the middle you know you have to update before the number starts racking up. Clicking on the App Store takes time, because I like to look at the update and read about all the things I’m getting myself into before I ruin my everyday schedule.

For those of you living under a rock last week Instagram had released a feature for where you can make a “story”…What’s that? A story? That sounds familiar. I’ve been asking people for the past couple of days how they feel about it and they're 50/50. No one really understands why Instagram made an update like this. “As I click through the stories I sometimes forgot that I’m on Instagram, it’s okay, I guess, but Snapchat did it first.”

There’s nothing wrong with a little upgrade once in a while but for Instagram to just “copy” the idea of what some of us desire the most on snapchat is it’s stories. The common phrase I hear the most is “Did you see (*my*,*his/her*) story?” Everyone just assumes it’s snapchat.

The only upside to the “Instagram Stories” is that they're not in the way, the mini circles where you see the profile picture of the person posting it will be at the top of the screen and out of reach to accidentally tap on them, Unlike snapchat the stories don’t go away after you're done “watching” them. They will be there for a full 24 hours but they are still going to stay on the screen for the time being.

Personally I don’t like that Instagram has stories now because why share what you're doing already on snapchat, then Instagram? We all know, the low quality picture and the video are for snapchat and the A1 picture is for Instagram and that’s the way it should be.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
