The Story Of My First Semester In College: Part 1

College: the best four years of your life. You have new friends, new experiences, and most importantly, complete and total freedom. Basically, it's your first big step into the real world.

But more freedom means more responsibilities. For me, college was such an exciting thought that seemed so far away, that when it finally came, I was ready to go. Ever since my junior year, I knew where I wanted to go so as soon as my acceptance letter came in, I began planning.

Mid-Agust, my parents and I stuffed the car with millions of decorations, mattresses, pillows, etc. that I had bought for my new home. I was going to be living in an off-campus apartment with my best friend since birth. I rented a space in a 4/4 so my friend and I would both be rooming with two girls we've never met. Finally, after three hours of driving, we arrive at the apartment.

I met the two other girls who seemed nice and immediately started setting up my room. It took me two whole days to set up my room and get some items we forgot. After that, it was Sunday, the day before my first day and the day my parents were leaving. You usually think you'd want parents to leave, but in reality, these people have been such a big part in your life it makes you sad. As I hugged my parent's goodbye I felt their tears fall, while my eyes started watering. They left and I went to my room, and for the first few minutes, I felt lonely. Don't worry though, that's completely normal.

The next day, it was my first day of classes. Was I nervous? Very. Was I excited? Of course. I texted my friends as I sat in my first class - math. Luckily though, I had a friend in that class, so we sat next to each other and he calmed down my nerves. I had my communications class next. The first day I didn't really talk to anyone, but now I have like five friends in that class.

My first day of school wasn't as bad as I thought. The next day I had history and philosophy. As I stepped into my first lecture class, I was intimidated. The lecture hall could fit up to 300 students, and I had never been in a class that large. My mind was going 100 mph and all I could think of was: "This is scary."

As I sat down, I recognized a familiar face, and I realized my friend was in this class. I called out her name and she motioned to sit next to her and we began talking. Class ends quickly and I walk out with her, where I meet one of her friends. We start talking and I realize we have a class in the same building, so we walk together and we just clicked. This girl is now one of my best friends. Soon enough though, my class was about to start. At first, I had a hard time finding where it was, but everyone was super helpful and pointed me in the right direction. I sat down and a minute later the teacher walks in.

"Hello, class, welcome to philosophy."

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
