Taylor Swift has somehow become a sensitive topic. Mentioning her name often gives me the same reaction I get if I mention something political. I don’t understand and will never understand why a harmless singer-songwriter is the topic of so much hate. Of course not everyone does and should have to like her music. Not everyone likes catchy pop tunes and songs that make you feel feelings your never knew you had, but hating her as a person (yes she is a human being with real human being feelings) is not something I tolerate.

At the age of 16, Swift released her self-titled debut album. Now, 10 years and 10 Grammy's later, she has released a total of five albums that have all been extremely successful. Swift writes all of her own songs and her third album, Speak Now, was entirely self-written. Swift has been the dosomething.org most charitable celebrity for four years in a row. Despite all of her success, she has somehow managed to stay extremely down-to-earth.

Taylor Swift has had eight boyfriends in the past 10 years. This is actually significantly less than most celebrities and actually significantly less than many people I know. However, even if it was 250 boyfriends it should not matter. People love to preach about stopping slut-shaming, but for some reason that never seems to apply to Taylor Swift.

Swift writes all of her own songs. Something many pop singers don’t do. This means that she uses inspiration from her own life and so often her songs are about her relationships. Why is this an issue? Do you know a pop singer who doesn’t sing about love and heartbreak? Swift is the only one who gets hate for it and I don’t understand why.

Recently, Swift has been getting a lot of hate for being a “white feminist.” I think of white feminism as white women trying to join the patriarchy instead of abolish it. White women who ignore the oppression and issues women of color face or step on women of color to try to achieve their own equality are white feminists. Taylor Swift has never done this. She is not extremely educated on all aspects of feminism, but that does not make her a white feminist. If you start attacking people for trying to be feminists doesn’t that ruin the whole purpose of feminism?

When a man, Kanye West, tried to take credit for Taylor Swift’s success she got angry and she got a lot of hate for it. I could talk about this topic for hours and give an exact play-by-play of the highly edited video that Kim Kardashian posted on her snapchat, but I won’t do that. Swift never denied the phone call happened, she never agreed to someone taking credit for her success, and she never got to listen to the song before it came out like West promised her.

The most recent garbage I am hearing about Taylor Swift is about the election. I am still confused how Taylor Swift and the election are related. There are people who are mad that Swift didn’t let Hillary Clinton pay her to post on social media to encourage her fans to vote for her. Taylor Swift is not a politician; she is an entertainer. Even if Taylor Swift had been Clinton’s loudest supporter, I highly doubt that would have changed the election.

Taylor Swift is more successful than you will ever be and if that makes you hate her than maybe you’re the one with the issues. Please stop being so fixated on hating her and let the woman live in peace.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
