Please Stop Talking About Female Olympians' Husbands

Michael Phelps will never be looked at as “husband of former Miss California.”

I am not an athletic person-- ask anyone. I have tried just about every sport on this planet and have managed to fail at every single one of them. Seriously. Basketball, lacrosse, cross country, track... you name it. But when events like March Madness, the Super Bowl, or the Olympics happen, I am suddenly the most athletic person on the planet. I will admit though, I watch gymnastics and not much else (shoutout to my girls Aly Raisman and Simone Biles for their AWESOME WIN. If you haven’t watched it I highly recommend it).

So, when I was watching the Olympics today, I decided to branch out a little and watch the Women’s Beach Volleyball Quarterfinal. I was so awed by these women's’ athletic abilities, I barely noticed when the sport’s announcer started going off about how talented one of the woman’s HUSBAND was. I was so astonished that this guy was actually talking about her husband when she was literally playing volleyball at the Olympics. Not only that, they won the Quarterfinal as well!!

We have definitely been hearing about the sexism at the Olympics: first with the infamous “Wife of a Bears’ Lineman” tweet (Corey Cogdell won a gold medal and the Chicago Tribune described her as a “Wife of a Bears’ Lineman), and second with almost every sports announcer ever saying Katie Ledecky “swims like a guy". So, naturally, I decided to add my own opinion into this.

I was reading some tweets on this and there were actually people who thought that this happens to men as well. I’m going to stop you right there. No. This does not happen to men, nor will it ever. Michael Phelps will never be looked at as “husband of former Miss California 2010.” Ryan Lochte would probably get offended if we said he "swam like a girl." Just look how offended male athletes got in this video where they were asked the same questions female athletes get asked.

We live in a society where women are objectified as pieces of flesh, as shown when Rio promised the "sexiest ever" Olympic's opening ceremony. They said "‘This is Brazil, after all, where the female body is celebrated like no other place on Earth." If the female body is celebrated then why don't we talk about the fact that a woman is raped every eleven minutes in Brazil?

We live in a society where catcalling should be considered a “compliment.” We live in a society where an insult would be that we “hit like a girl” or “cry like a girl” or basically “act like a girl.” We live in a society where women receive .78 cents for every dollar a man makes.

We live in a society that has come very far in fighting misogynistic ideals, but not far enough. So no, this will never happen to men, and this shouldn't be happening to women.

These female athletes have worked their WHOLE LIVES to be able to compete in the Olympics, so let's respect them and keep the attention on them.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
