Stop With The Stereotypes

Sometimes, my inner feminist comes out.

Stereotypes, good and bad, constantly influence our lives and thoughts without us even realizing it. I read a paragraph in my communication book that really made me think. It involved a young boy and his father getting into a horrible car crash. The father died instantly, and the boy was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. The surgeon walked into the operating room and claimed, “I cannot be in charge, for this is my son.” This little story confused many. How could this be the surgeon’s son when the father died on impact? Well, here is your answer: the boy has a mother too. Most immediately assume the surgeon to be a male and did not even take his mom into perspective. That being said, gender roles are still a huge component of our society. It is 2017, and something needs to change.

I know you have read many feminist posts and pieces about how women can do anything men can do. After all, how do you think the term “meninist” came to be? People are tired of hearing about it, but that doesn’t mean we need to keep our voices down. Especially after recent events, Women’s Marches took place all over the country on January 21st, and I thought it was one of the most awesome things. If anyone ever makes you feel inferior and devalues your worth, then please do not stay quiet. Every person has the right to be heard.

We should have the same opportunities as men do within the work force. A surgeon should be a gender neutral term, but it isn’t. Neither is doctor. And neither is policeMAN. In reference to my first paragraph, people automatically give these jobs a masculine aura. It just makes me sad that we are still considered the weaker and more vulnerable sex. Even in regards to stature, men are more dominating. I want my opinions to be taken seriously, but sometimes my size can hinder that. Even when I do get angry, people mainly boys think that I’m being “crazy” because that’s how all girls are right?

Therefore, be crazy. Shout your opinions. If you aren’t being treated right, do not be afraid to put him in his place. Be respectful, but be strong. You do not owe anyone anything, but you deserve everything if you work for it. Times are changing, and I’m unsure of what the future may hold. Just be confident in yourself and you’ll find that great things will come your way. Maybe someday, the story about the car crash won’t be so confusing.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
