I have heard multiple complaints from people, especially women, deeming the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as “degrading” to women or “shaming” women and something that “only perverts watch.” Well, I am a woman who has always watched the fashion show with my sister, mom, friends, etc. and I personally have never felt degraded or offended by the models who walk in the show for Victoria's Secret.
Yes, the models wear revealing or "raunchy" outfits and yes they are “showing off their bodies,” but they are models. It is their job. They work extremely hard for their bodies and to get casted to walk in the most sought-after modeling gig in the industry is so prestigious that it can change their lives and their careers in the best way. Victoria's Secret sells lingerie so it would only make sense that the models would model those types of looks. Victoria's Secret doesn't sell turtlenecks people! They model the clothing that the store has, it really only makes sense. They are "sexy" because they are supposed to be! That is the brand and there really shouldn't be any shame in that at all.
These Victoria’s Secret angels who model the lingerie and outfits in the show have worked hard for their spot and they deserve respect for the amount of confidence it takes to be able to get up on a stage with millions watching you and show off your body for the brand. So why are we slut-shaming them or saying they are a “disgrace” to women? Is it because they are comfortable in their own skin and work hard every day and have the body positivity and confidence every woman should have? Because that should not be the case.
Modeling is an extremely hard career to have in the first place and these women should not be judged for their confidence and hard work. Moral of the story is, if you don’t want to watch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show then don’t. But don’t rip on another woman just because she has body confidence and is willing to show it off and share it, literally, with the whole world.
This fashion show should not be deemed as "offensive" as it has been. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but if we are preaching body positivity for women, why is it that when a woman actually becomes comfortable enough and confident enough in their body to be able to show it off for their professional line of work, we shame them or think it is "degrading" or giving women a "bad rep" because of it?
