Just over a week ago, Pokémon Go was released to the app stores and is now spreading like wildfire. Pokémon Go now has more users than both Tinder and Twitter. The app allows people of ALL ages to unleash their inner Pokémon master and catch Pokémon in REAL LIFE. Many people have been bashing the app (basically saying that we are too busy catching Pokémon to go out and work) and this needs to stop, because Pokémon Go is really having an amazing effect.
Firstly, Pokémon Go encourages users to GO OUTSIDE and walk. The current generation is constantly harassed for their attachment to electronics and their inability to leave the house because they are too busy playing Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto. In Pokémon Go, you must walk around and go to locations to find Pokémon, supplies, and gyms. I personally have been outside more as well as seeing more people walking around than ever.
Not only is the app forcing people outdoors, but the Pokéstops and gyms are placed in strategic locations. This includes parks, historical monuments, and churches. So, while people are roaming the streets, they might actually learn a thing or two, because none of the stops are placed in locations like Dunkin' Donuts or Walmart, which are places we're likely to go anyway.
The other main argument against the app is that it is blinding society from what is really going on in our country. Let me tell you, it's not. I am just as aware of the turmoil wreaking havoc across our nation as anyone else is. Pokémon Go is just a chance for a distraction from all of the madness to have some fun. For just a little while, we can forget that we are adults with responsibilities living in a world full of disaster, terrorism, and fighting so that we can find Pikachu and relive our childhoods. Just because I am playing a game does not make me oblivious to the world. Nobody said anything to the people who have spent the last few years playing Candy Crush, so why should we treat Pokémon Goers any differently?
For me, Pokémon Go lets me remember all of the fun I had with Pokémon when I was younger. I have played nearly every game, so of course I had to get this one as well! While it is quite different from handheld games, it is the closest to becoming a Pokémon trainer I will become, and it's just purely fun. The app lets you battle gyms, become a gym leader, and defend one of three teams: Mystic, Instinct, or Valor. Not only does this get old Pokéfans back to what they loved so much, but it is exposing so many new people to the Pokémon World while getting them off the couch at the same time. So, rather than call those of us who do play the game childish, you should look at the positive impacts of the game.... and maybe even try it yourself!
