Breasts have been sexualized in modern society through the influence of laws, religion, and mere shame from others. Generally, the larger the size of the breast, the more likely it is prone to sexual discrimination. But what do breast sizes really signify?
First, I believe it is necessary to clearly define the anatomy of a breast to avoid confusion.
The female breast and the male breast are almost identical in anatomy: the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple), the nipple, and breast tissue. The sole genetic difference between the sexes and their breast anatomy is the mammary gland in women. The function of the mammary gland is to produce nutritious food for offspring, similar to other mammals. The gland gives women the appearance of a larger breast area.
So, breast sizes merely mean that one woman has a different size mammary gland from another.
Now, I must ask, what about a milk-producing mammary gland is so sexy in society? What about this is so promiscuous? What about this allows others to categorize women as sluts or asking for it? Why is it that the larger the gland, the more discrimination women face when wearing outfits identical to those with smaller features?
It's a mammary gland. And there is nothing promiscuous about it.
In fact, if it really is necessary to sexualize women's amazing and beautiful boobs, then it must be fair game to consider facial hair or the enlarged Adam's apple in men to be just as promiscuous. All three of these are defined as secondary sex characteristics, meaning that they are nonproductive traits.
Women are ostracized and discriminated against in public places for breast feeding their infants, with protests claiming that the visibility of the breast makes one uncomfortable or sexually aroused. This forces women to hide in shame one of the most natural aspects of motherhood.
If you think it's so gross, look away. I hope your mother did not waste her days feeding you only for you to become a human who despises the act itself.
I am not encouraging anyone to go out and "free the nipple." That is not my choice to make for another woman. I am encouraging those who wish to feel the freedom of showing their beautiful body to the world without fear of discrimination, whether it be completely shirtless, a new low-cut top they've been dying to wear, or to simply feed a hungry child in a place where it is most convenient. Breasts are a commonality between the sexes and should be treated so in society. No disgust, no judgement, just love for the human species and the amazing thing their bodies are made of.
