Fires. Hurricanes. Earthquakes. Natural Disasters seem to be endless in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. In today’s digital age we are able to see the vast destruction live. In California we see people and animals running away from burning fires. In Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean Islands we see whole cities in ruins and without power due to hurricanes.
You are not able to go on Facebook without seeing post after post filled with videos and pictures of the destruction. The comments are full of people saying something along the lines of, “I'll pray for you.” Whether you are religious or not, those words are kind. You have someone out there thinking about you, but at the same time, I don’t think that’s enough.
You have people in Houston, Texas dealing with toxic water and dangerous fumes while dealing with Harvey’s aftermath. You have people in Florida who could be without power for months. You have people all around the globe that are dealing with these natural disasters. Instead of just saying, “I’ll pray for you,” we should get away from our screens and actually make a difference. Donate money, food, clothing, and time.
The NPR (National Public Radio) lists many ways to help, and USA Today lists some as well. With a simple google search, you can find hundreds of foundations, charities, and services ready for you to help these suffering individuals and communities.
You can pray and pray all day long, but next time, think about getting up and actually doing something that is going to make the biggest impact. We are all stronger together.
