October is here, which means voter registration deadlines are quickly approaching. Deadlines will vary depending on the state you currently reside in, but you can find more about that here. Voting seems like something should and would do, but sadly only 1 in 3 millennials voted in the 2012 Presidential election. This year we're not gonna let that happen. Instead, we want everyone to vote. Now, you might be reading this and wondering, "Why should I even bother voting? It has no affect on me whatsoever."
Wrong!
There are many reasons why you should be voting. In fact, here are a few to name:
1. It's your civic duty.
As an American citizen, you are given the right to vote. Your job is to vote for a candidate that best represents your ideals and interests.
2. We live in a Democracy.
The United States of America is a democracy. We were built upon democratic principles.
3. Millennials need to represent themselves.
No one votes in the elections with millennials in mind. We, the millennials, have to get out and represent our ideas and beliefs by voting together.
4. Won't vote? Don't complain.
No one likes a hypocrite. Won't vote? Fine, but don't plan on complaining.
5. People fought for your right to vote.
People have fought and will continue to fight for your right to vote. Not a lot of people are able to express their voices out loud, so be grateful for this right and embrace it.
6. Next four years will matter to you.
Whether you will be attending college, paying bills, getting married, starting a family, finding a new home, or anything else, the elections will matter to you. There are tons of different
7. Florida...
The unclear mess that formed in Florida during the 2000 Presidential elections will forever be engraved in the minds of everyone at the time. Just ask your parents and they should be able to explain just how close the election was.
In the end, consider all of these and more when you decide whether to register or not. Believe it or not, the election will play some role for everyone. Stop making excuses for yourself. Register yourself to vote. Let your voice be heard.
