Most college students will tell you that “What is your major?” is the most frequent—and sometimes most annoying—question they receive. People always seem to be judging others based on their major, as if one field is honestly better than another. I’m tired of people shaming other people’s majors.
Ever since I was six years old, I have dreamed of becoming a teacher. Teachers are some of the first role models that children have in their lives and they have the power to shape their students into intelligent citizens of this country. So as an English and Education major, the most common response I always get is: "You aren't going to make that much money." This infuriates me to no end because people who say this have no idea what they're talking about and most likely are not in any place to judge. Our country is always in need of fresh, new educators and that will never change. So I know there will always be plenty of jobs for me to apply to.
I'm done with people thinking so highly of themselves and looking down on others just because their "thing" isn't someone else's thing. I respect other people's skills and talents. If you can balance equations and conduct labs and study chemical reactions, great for you. I will admit that that stuff does not come easily to me, and I'm just not interested in it. However studying a foreign language, writing 20-page papers, creating PowerPoint presentations, and public speaking is what I am good at. In fact, public speaking and good writing are two of the most important skills anyone can learn and can help you with ANY career path you choose.
So to all the people who like to major shame, please stop. No, you're not the only one who has homework. The only one who has to study. The only one who is going to be successful. Everyone is different and that is what makes the world so colorful. If everyone excelled in the same field, life would be a pretty boring place. Be proud of your major and let others be proud of theirs, too.
