Stop Putting Down Greek Life

It's not for everyone, but that's not for you to decide.

The fall semester has begun for most places, and with it comes the approaching of Greek life recruitment across the board. While this can be exciting for sisters and brothers alike, it also means we're about to start talking about our organizations almost nonstop and will often have to deal with the negative reaction people have to the topic of Greek life. Most of the time, the comments come from prospective members who are just worried because of what they've seen on TV or heard about on the internet. However, when it starts to come from people who will never join, but who insist on denouncing Greek life without having a clue what they're talking about, then it starts to really become a problem. I can guarantee I'm not the only person who's entirely done with these attitudes but let me tell you why.

That being said, I recognize that being a sister or a brother isn't something everyone desires. Some people just don't feel called to join Greek life and that's something I completely respect. When someone says to me that they just aren't interested, I don't take it personally. On the flip side, when someone says I'm a terrible person for being a member of the community or telling others considering rushing that they shouldn't because of their opinion of Greek life, that's when I have an issue. We as brothers and sisters don't denounce people who choose not to join us. We also don't go around discouraging people from joining other groups simply because we're not a part of them. No, Greek life isn't for everyone. No, I don't expect everyone to understand what Greek life is really about. However, all I can ask is that you respect us and stop treating us like dirt. You don't have to join, but stop trying to keep others from going out and trying for something they might enjoy.

Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
