Stop Putting Down Franklin

I'm not ashamed of where I come from.

Yes, I come from Franklin and I am proud.

I come from one of those cities that everyone likes to trash and talk crap about. Even the people that have been born and raised there are the ones to talk the most. Every city has it’s faults, it’s more dangerous part of the city, it’s most used gas station, it’s scumbags, it’s snotty “I’m better than anyone else” families, it’s city disagreements, and it’s rough and over analyzed school system. Many people in NH when they hear about Franklin, they’re nose crinkles up and their eyes roll.

“You’re from Franklin?”,

“We all know how bad those Franklin people are.”

“Franklin or do you mean Skanklin?”

“Franklin people don’t go anywhere.”

Franklin, NH has it’s faults just like every other city but it also has it’s strengths. But you don’t really ever hear about those or like to acknowledge those now do you? Along with our scumbags, and low life’s we have hardworking, honest, caring people. We have people busting their ass to make it a better place, to keep business going, to make it a place for kids to grow up and their families to be happy.

Our school system definitely hasn’t been the best, and being a high school graduate from Franklin High I can fully admit that. But behind that we have genuine teachers trying to help kids further their education. Because of the budget cuts and the hell that the school system has been through the schools have lost many amazing people but the teachers that remain are buying their own supplies, staying after hours, going to after school meetings and voicing their opinions. There are teachers who are scared and exhausted but are still fighting for their jobs and their student’s education. They’re the ones who need to be noticed.

Yes, we have the kids that roam the halls, skip class, don’t do their work but we also have the kids that are working so hard and making the best out of what they have. Students from Franklin do succeed. We have some amazing people coming out of Franklin High that are going to change the world right next to the people who went to overpriced private schools. Because it’s all what you make it. It’s easy to blame it on the school system but the truth is you have to actually work for what you want.

We have an amazing athletics department that has been through it’s fair share. It’s where the real trash talking is. Yes, we get into many fights with other schools because Franklin has so much pride when it comes to sports. We have amazingly talented athletes and have a lot of them going to college on scholarships. The coaches have been nothing short of amazing when it comes to their teams and yes that has been at question but you will never see Franklin athletes, coaches, or parents not fighting for the sports they love.

We have massive crowds at our games supporting all of the athletes. And when something tragic has happened the athletes are one of the first to support with specially designed shirts, ribbons, painted faces, and shout outs. So much blood, sweat, and tears have gone into Franklin athletics by athletes, students, parents, teachers, coaches, and more.

We have a community of amazing people that dedicate so much of their time to making Franklin their home and nothing is ever going to change that. I am proud to be from Franklin.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
