I stand here to argue against the idea that human beings, as a general population, have a solid understanding of what a “priority” is considered to be. Is this a widely argued topic? I am not quite sure. Do I personally know the backgrounds and reasons behind every person who is reading this priority list? Absolutely not. However, if you continue to read, I will share with you, what I believe should be the universally, understood meaning of a “priority” in today’s society.
The dictionary definition of a “priority” is a noun, meaning “a thing that is regarded as more important than another” however, this noun is not clear when it comes to each of our own lives. Some of the choices we make in life create priorities for us, and others do not. Having a child creates the obligation to care for it. Buying a home requires a mortgage payment. Even though these obligations in life can be avoided, if you choose to pursue them, you can clearly, and physically see the consequences of you choosing to avoid what is deemed to be a "priority." If you don’t pay your mortgage, you lose your home.
However, when it comes down to be what should be our number one priority, the growth of ourselves, it is seen as "selfish" which is not true whatsoever. It just isn't as easy to see the internal decay of another human being, or even ourselves. Even if its visible, it can be easily ignored. Most of the time it is simple to ignore our own needs and focus on those of other people or other things, because when we make choices for ourselves they require much more thought and hold larger consequences. Prioritizing bad habits, friends, boyfriends, needs of others; are all things that can negatively impact us by deeming these as "priorities"instead ourselves.
In order to be successful; academically, socially, mentally, you MUST consider yourself as a priority in your life. These are far too many distractions allowing us to get wrapped up in someone else's issues.
We all are busy. Whether you are a parent, a student, or an employee we all have tasks that come up each day that we tolerate and take care of. Don’t put yourself, and what betters you, to the end of the list. Don’t skip class. Class is a priority. Drink your water, get your rest and pay attention to your mental, and physical health. Because those are the priorities. Everything else comes with a grain of salt. You come first.
Everyone has their own formula and it’s easy to forget yourself sometimes. Be a little selfish. Each morning, take a moment to breathe and evaluate your mind, body and surroundings. Think about your long term and short term goals. How will you prioritize your day, week, month and year to keep working on the masterpiece, to become the best YOU?
