13 Reasons Why, a Selena Gomez-produced Netflix series, came out two weeks ago, and it already has broken records for Netflix. More than thousands of people tweeted during the first days and week of the release. The series brings many emotions and displays a powerful message about cyberbullying.
Teenager Hannah Baker commits suicide after being bullied and harassed. Clay Jensen receives a shoe box filled with 13 tapes and listens to the 13 Reasons Why Hannah took her own life. Boys treated her like a slut, her so-called friends betrayed her, etc.
Some viewers don't understand the true meaning behind this story. Recently, on Instagram and Twitter, people have created memes of Hannah Baker of asking a kid for a pencil, and when they denied, she says 'welcome to your tape.' Most of the memes are basically stating that the reasons she killed herself are kind of stupid. She doesn't know how to handle situation and when people do something to her, she adds them to a tape.
Please stop and think of what you're doing. Maybe killing herself wasn't the right choice and she could've handled the situation better. However, she was sexually harassed, she was bullied, she was slut-shamed. Those are not easy situations to go through. No girl wants to see her picture with her crush going around the school. Her so-called friends leave her and then one of them starts a list about her butt and more pictures of her in a compromising situation goes around. Men don't treat her right and think she can just be used for pleasure and enjoyment. This show isn't meant to be made fun through memes. There are serious issues. There can be many people in the world going through something similar. Don't forget the message about the show: Bullying and Cyberbulling is not right. Words and actions of others can really affect people. Think before you do something to people because it can have consequences. Slut-shaming is not okay. Stalking people is not okay. Rape is not okay.
Think before you do something.
