There comes a point where "internet fame" has gone too far. To everyone who feels the need to make memes or gifs about the new Netflix series "13 Reasons Why," this is why you need to stop.
Teen suicide is becoming an epidemic.
A "meme" is defined by Urban Dictionary as "a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc." Any suicidal teenager who sees these images on the internet should not, and do not, deserve to coincide their suicidal tendencies with "humor" or some sort of joke. Suicide is not humorous. It is not glamourous. It is not something beautiful. Suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 25. Suicide rates have soared 24 percent in the U.S. since 1999.
"13 Reasons Why" is a series made to make awareness to teenage suicide. After watching this series, a person, especially a person who is suicidal, should feel like they are worthy. They should feel like they add value to this world. This show should spark a change with these suicidal teenagers. Whether that change is a change of self-worth, or admitting they need help. As a society, we need to stop putting other people at risk for a chance for fame. We need to stop and think if these "memes" we are making are worth the life of someone on the brink of suicide? A person's 15 minutes of fame could potentially take someone else's life.
As someone who has felt suicidal before, I do not feel like these memes are appropriate. It is a shame that there are people in this world who would stoop to extreme lows to humor an epidemic that is not funny. As human beings we need to root for each other. We need to be each other's cheerleaders. The next Hannah Baker could see these images. The next life taken could be because of these images. Someone's best friend, sister, daughter, cousin, girlfriend, etc could kill themselves because they think no one will take their thoughts seriously.
Please think twice about humoring the reason behind why "13 Reasons Why" was created.
