Stop Letting Society Tell You What To Do

Societal standards are a mess.

Perfect is a word that people use to describe things that seem fine. Many people strive to be perfect, but I do not think there is any such thing. Perfect is defined as something that has all the desirable characteristics, or as close as possible to that. Even the definition is imperfect because it says, "or as close as possible to that." You do not need to be perfect all of the time. It is part of being human to be imperfect sometimes. Society tells us that we need to be perfect all of the time and that we cannot even remotely mess up.

This is not true.

Plenty of people are really hard on themselves because society sits there and tells us that we cannot mess up or fail. Personally, I am really hard on myself to try and be perfect and not mess up. I know in the back of my head that this is not reality.

Life is full of messing up and failing. Messing up and failing are OK. This is what allows us to learn and grow as people. You do not need to have all the things your friends have just to be accepted into a little "clique."

My mother always told me it is better to have a small circle of real friends than a big circle of fake ones. If we let society tell us how to live our lives, we would all go crazy because society is not realistic. We all enjoy life in our own way, and we all enjoy different things. That is what makes us all so amazing. Societal standards are unnecessary anyway.

Societal pressure is why some people have mental illnesses. They get so hung up on how other people want them to be, and it takes a toll on their mental health.

Do not waste time on trying to make other people happy. It is important that you make yourself happy first or else you will never be able to really enjoy life and all it has to offer.

Do not decline a piece of pizza just because someone told you that you were overweight earlier in the day because chances are that person is jealous of you. We are ALL beautiful in our own way. I firmly believe that.

Every body type, skin color, eye color, height and whatever else, is beautiful. I want boys and girls to know that they are amazing no matter what other people tell them. We can all contribute something to this world so all of us belong here.

You have a purpose. We all have a purpose on this earth. If you ever feel like you do not have a purpose remember that it is out there, you just have to find it. Everyone should ignore societal standards and really believe in themselves. It is when you truly believe in yourself that you can really make a change for the better.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
