Stop Labeling Abortion As A Sin

Some things should be kept out of religion.

Stop Labeling Abortion As A Sin

As someone who has not had to face pregnancy just yet and who is not religious, it may be difficult to hear me out and take my stance seriously. I may seem a bit biased. There are some things that I have noticed throughout my mere 20 years of life, and one of those things is that the extremists of religion like to be angry. They get angry about anything that threatens them, or even things that don’t threaten them - gay marriage and abortion - yet they choose to be angry about it simply because they don’t like it.

Being angry about things that really don't involve you makes absolutely no sense, which is why I feel that something as personal as abortion should be kept out of religion all together. I understand the stance of wanting all children to be born because children are a beautiful thing and every one should have the right to life. But what if that life consisted of addiction, poverty, abuse and/or having a broken family? What if the person having the child knew that there was no way she could provide for the baby? What if it was predetermined that the infant would have several medical complications that would result in a short life or a very painful life? If you ask me, I don’t think that it is very fair to have the child even after you knew their life would not be the best life it could be.

Now if you are against abortion and you are having one child after the other, I hope that for the sake of not just the child, but society, that you are able to provide for every single child that comes out of your household. Every child should have the right to be raised in an environment that will make them amazing individuals and great members of society. If you are having children and you can’t support all of their dreams and goals, financially or morally, simply because you have too many kids, then that’s not fair either. Every child that is born has the right to an incredible life.

Whatever your stance is on the matter, there is no reason to involve something like religion. As far as I know, all God wants is for everyone to be happy and live the best life. Having the best life is the responsibility of each person. Do whatever it takes to have the best life for yourself and your family. Do not bring others down for what having the best life means for them. Be kind to one another, and respect everyone around you. Never forget that you do not know everyone’s story, so do not be so quick to judge, and that is something that everyone, not just the extremists of religion, can work on.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
