Titus 3:2-5 is a very humbling verse and serves as a reminder to Christians. Sometimes in our walks we forget what we were like before our salvation and we forget what God forgave of us. Verse two says to speak no evil of any man. We are not to see people and judge them on what we see. The verse goes on to say that we are to be gentle. Verse three says that we are not to do this because we were once like them. Before we were saved, we were living for ourselves and only cared about our own lusts just like they do. Verse four reminds them that they lived this way until by the kindness of God we were saved. He sent His son to be a sacrifice for us so that we could be rid of our lustful attitudes. Verse five them reminds Christians that it was anything that we did that helped to cleanse us, but rather it was by God’s mercy that we were saved and washed clean of our sin. Christian’s should not judge because we were all sinners and now because Jesus came we are saved by grace and are rid of our former selves.
I have to be very careful about his on a daily bases. It is so easy for me to judge other people just by the things that I see, but that is unfair. This verse reminds me that I was once like them and that it was by God’s mercy that I have been made new. Instead of standing back and judging what other people are doing and how they are living, I should be loving them and sharing with them the love of Jesus Christ so that they also can be cleansed of their sins. The first verse says that we should never approach ready for a fight. What I think this is saying is that we should not try to tell them everything that they are doing wrong. We need to share with them the love of God so that they can see for themselves what they are doing wrong. Attacking someone and pointing out their flaws is never going to point them in the direction of the Lord. Before we start pointing out everyone else’s flaws, we need to remember our own flaws.
