Dear Little Sister,

Why are you growing up so fast?

Dear Little Sister,

Dear Little Sister,

This one is hard to write because you are growing up before my very eyes. I love you so much and I am so happy I get the chance to be your big sister. This letter is for you.

You are already in the seventh grade and wearing makeup. This should not be allowed. I want a brick to be placed on your head so that you can't grow anymore! You are taller than me which I believe should never happen. I want you to stay little!

I am the big sister for a reason. I thought that I would always be the taller one so that I could protect you; now most days you do the protecting and it is usually for me. I never thought that I would need you to help me remember my right from left. I didn't think that you would remember memories better than me. I thought that was my job.

You love everything that I have loved since you were able to. When my favorite color was green, so was yours. When I liked One Direction, you liked One Direction. When I loved gymnastics, so did you, although you were the one who could do anything in gymnastics. I remember when you did the most beautiful toe-touch on our trampoline. I also remember when you got your back-walkover perfectly. You took me out into the yard when I got home and said, "Watch me sissy, I can do it now!" You were so proud that you got it. That look of accomplishment is something I will never forget. I look back on it now and realize I should have paid closer attention.

When I loved riding horses, you did too; now this one took you a while to catch onto because they were so much bigger than you were. But now you aren't afraid of them and whenever you got the chance, you went and rode the horses. I used to find this annoying, but now I find it admirable. I didn't know I was cool enough for somebody to copy me. I realize you did this because you looked up to me. I am your big sister and you want to be just like me. I love you for this.

I love how big and beautiful your heart is. I love your love for almost everything. It shines through you and it is the first thing people will notice. You have such a peaceful and graceful heart. You know right from wrong and you understand it. Most girls your age will not understand why something is wrong like you do. You take so many things into consideration and it makes you see things from a different perspective. I love that your heart is so big! I hope that you will realize that when you get older your big heart will be the most beautiful thing people see in you. It is what makes you different from other girls your age.

I love that you are so smart. I know homeschooling is different but I didn't know you could be this smart and wise. Children your age are not usually this smart. I love that you are learning Latin. Yes, Latin. Sometimes you say things and try to remember the Latin word for it. I also love how high your reading level is. You are reading giant books in just a few days. You love to read and it is such a beautiful thing to see. You read these giant books and you can comprehend and understand them. It is crazy to see!

Oh, dear little sister, I love you so much and I am so glad I get to call myself your big sister! I don't know what I would do without you. I wouldn't trade you for anything in this world!

Love,

Your Big Sister

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
