The Moment I Stopped Comparing Myself

The Moment I Stopped Comparing Myself
Nikoletta Kataxenos

Let’s be honest, we all compare ourselves to others.

We compare our bodies, our talents, our achievements, our looks, and our success. Social media nowadays, we’re scrolling through Instagram and we compare on how many likes our pictures get compared to others. Stop. Why do we do that? Does it make us feel better? Help us grow? Make us a better person? No, no and no.

Stop comparing yourself.Be kind to yourself.

Instead of judging and comparing, congratulate yourself. I decided to stop comparing myself because I knew I deserved more love and appreciation than that. It got tiring always comparing myself to others. I felt like I was never good enough and always felt depressed.

As soon as I told myself that it’s time to stop comparing myself and focus on me I immediately started feeling better. I started gaining more confidence, feeling more of a leader, but most importantly, I felt happier, a lot happier.

You need to really want it though. You have to truly focus on it, and set it as your goal. You can’t just say, “I’ll stop comparing myself,” because that won’t work. Just like anything else in life, you need to work hard for what you want and if you want to be free, happy and have self-confidence, you need to work on it.

It’s not easy at first, but take it day by day. I joined new clubs at school, took a random elective, I spent about 15 minutes a day doing something that helped me feel relaxed, such as, yoga, or reading a book, and I wasn’t on my phone as much. All this made me feel like I had my life together, and it felt great. I felt like I could conquer anything, and nothing could stop me.

Be proud of who you are and of your accomplishments.

It’s okay that you walked 2 miles instead of running them. You still worked out didn’t you?

It’s okay that you got a B+ instead of an A. It’s only a grade, it’s not the end of the world.

It’s okay that you can’t whistle, I can’t either.

It’s okay that you’re not good at cooking, that’s what carryout is for!

You have your own things that you’re good at, and you should embrace them! We are all different. We have different body shapes, mindsets, talents, and weaknesses, but that's what makes us.

Take it day by day, and you'll feel the peace and happiness come right through. You will start enjoying life more, and feel more thankful. It's a great feeling.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
